Upswing is celebrating Tutor Week October 12th–16th! To celebrate, we asked students to nominate the Upswing tutor who has impacted them the most.

Stephanie Stearns was nominated as one of our honorees! 🎊

Stephanie has been an asynchronous writing coach with Upswing since 2016. Her background of once being an English teacher and librarian give her an edge as a writing tutor. During her time with Upswing, she has reviewed and provided feedback on over 4,000 student essays! Students describe Stephanie as “Knowledgeable”, “Timely”, “Kind, helpful, and a positive influence.” As an Upswing team member, Stephanie is dependable, warm, communicative, and willing to help fellow coaches whenever she can. Stephanie is always ready to jump in and provide timely feedback and support while never sacrificing quality. We are sincerely thankful that Stephanie chooses to make a difference with Upswing.

We asked Stephanie to share her perspective on tutoring with us. Below are her thoughts.

Q: Why do you choose to tutor with Upswing?

A: “I started tutoring with Upswing because I needed to retire from teaching to work at home as a caregiver for my precious special needs daughter when she graduated high school.”

Q: What’s your favorite aspect of tutoring?

A: “I love getting the opportunity to work with these students online. I wasn’t ready to leave the classroom and retire, but taking care of my daughter at home was most important. Having the ability to work online with students through Upswing allows me to continue teaching students the technology, research, and writing skills that are so important in today’s environment.”

Q: Tell us why you think education/access to academic support is so important.

A: “Academic support is paramount to the success of students; without support, student retention would suffer. I believe a well-educated workforce improves society.”

Q: What has been one of your favorite “break through moments” while tutoring?

A: “My favorite breakthrough moment was when a student, who didn’t know how to organize an essay or even how to construct a body paragraph, clearly understood essay organization after I explained it and shared some resources. He told me he had never understood the concept prior to our exchange.”

Stephanie, and tutors like her, make a lasting impact because their passion for education and supporting others shines through their work ☀️.
