Upswing is celebrating Tutor Week October 12th–16th! To celebrate, we asked students to nominate the Upswing tutor who has impacted them the most.

Sankar Rao was nominated as one of our honorees! 🎊

Sankar has been a math tutor with Upswing since 2016. With a bachelor’s degree in Engineering and as a certified online math tutor with over seven years of experience, he has been a valued member of our team! Since joining us, he’s tutored over 3,000 sessions with an overall rating of 4.77/5. According to students, he is “Extremely patient”, “Kind”, “Professional”, and “The best because he truly helps [them] understand math better!”. As an Upswing team member, he is reliable, quick to communicate, friendly, and committed.

We asked Sankar to share his perspective on tutoring with Upswing. Below is what he shared.

Q: Why do you choose to tutor with Upswing?

“Upswing is the platform where my passion for teaching is well honored and best rewarded.

Upswing has always been on the cutting edge when it comes to the interactive
whiteboard, which has great online collaboration tools that make online sessions enjoyable and easy to handle.

Above all, this is a company with high morals and values, that offers selfless online tutoring services, and is on a mission to end the attrition by providing personalized college experience.”

Q: What’s your favorite aspect of tutoring?

“My favorite aspect of tutoring is, assessing the prior knowledge of the student, understanding the knowledge gaps and bridging the gap with proper planning and a strategy that works best for a student.

The objective is to guide the students to a certain point, beyond which they become an independent learner, no longer needing a tutor.

This aspect of tutoring helps not only boost the student’s confidence but also to understand the concepts quickly.”

Q: Tell us why you think education/access to academic support is so important.

“Every student has got a different pace of learning and his own way of visualizing and grasping the concepts. Not every student in the classroom can get a complete hold of the material discussed and this leads to a lack of confidence on the subject.

This lack of confidence accumulates over a period of time during the semester and leads to a college dropout.

This is where accesses to academic support plays a vital role in supporting students morally and academically. It not only reduces attrition rates but also helps students to perform well in their tests.

Moreover, unlike classroom coaching, in academic support, every student gets a one-to-one attention.”

Q: What has been one of your favorite “break through moments” while tutoring?

“A student was preparing for the SAT exam and was finding it difficult to cope up with math concepts. She was consuming more time to solve math problems and accuracy levels were low. Her parents approached me for help and the training for SAT with all concepts and shortcut methods went on for 4 months.

I was delighted to hear that she made it to one of the top universities and was awarded a scholarship. This was my very first breakthrough moment and later on, my journey started helping many students overseas to make it to the top universities.”

Sankar has a deep understanding of the goals of tutoring and knows how to reach those goals with his students. We are thankful he chooses to make a difference with Upswing!
