Upswing is celebrating Tutor Week October 12–16! To celebrate, we asked students to nominate the Upswing tutor who has impacted them the most.
Tobi Akinmusuru was nominated as one of our honorees!
As a professional subject matter expert, Tobi tutors a breadth of subjects ranging from Basic Computer Skills, to Advanced Accounting. Since joining us in Spring of 2019, Tobi has tutored a remarkable near 2,500 sessions with an overall rating of 4.73/5. In nominations and session feedback, students describe Tobi as “Motivating”, “Helpful”, “10/10”, and, “An incredible tutor!”. As an Upswing team member, Tobi is reliable, a quick and effective communicator, and goes above and beyond in helping his students and fellow coaches. We’re thankful that Tobi has chosen to make a difference with Upswing.
We asked Tobi to share his perspective on tutoring with Upswing. Below is what he shared.
Q: Why do you choose to tutor with Upswing?
A: “I chose to tutor with upswing because I liked the fact that they were partnered with institutions of higher education. This was interestingly unique for me because it standardizes the educational content that I see when I tutor.”
Q: What’s your favorite aspect of tutoring?
A: “My favorite aspect of tutoring is assisting non traditional students, like myself, and teaching them random tricks for accomplishing the tasks.”
Q: Tell us why you think education/access to academic support is so important.
A: “Access to academic support is important because the right academic support staff can properly prepare a student for the real world. It teaches students that it is ok, not to understand something instantly and it is ok to make numerous mistakes.”
Q: What has been one of your favorite “break through moments” while tutoring?
A: “My favorite tutoring moment was watching one of my calculus students slowly progress from not understanding the subject to being able to take derivatives by hand without a calculator at the highest level of proficiency.”
